Earth tu Face
Earth tu Face is a 100% natural skincare line based in Oakland, California. Founders Sarah Buscho and Marina Storm use food grade ingredients to create plant-based products, each one inspired by the herbs and flowers growing in their gorgeous garden.
At present the range contains cleansers, toners, serums, moisturisers, masks, balms, scrubs, shower gel, lotions and beautifully-packaged botanical perfumes.
Everything is formulated without parabens, phthalates, sulfates, alcohol, mineral oils, EDTA, GMOs, synthetic filler, fragrances or preservatives and all products are suitable for vegans.
I spoke to Sarah about training as a herbalist, the importance of
laughing often and what will come next...
WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO START EARTH TU FACE?
At first, Earth tu Face was a small, hand-made line. It wasn't planned. Marina and I thought we would be working as herbalists and making herbal remedies from our gardens. It was actually a happy accident that the skincare line took off. The community became interested, which showed us that there was a need for the line. We stepped back and looked at the situation and decided that if we were really going to start selling to stores, making the products available to many, we would have to take a risk and figure out how to create products we stand behind on a larger scale. We wanted to deliver natural products that give glowing results and are safe for everyone.
WHY DO YOU FEEL IT'S SO IMPORTANT TO USE NATURAL INGREDIENTS?
It's a lifestyle choice. We use plant extracts in sustainable ways because, to me, using ingredients that are fast-growing and sustainable does less harm than chemical ingredients that are harmful to ourselves and the planet. It is an attempt to consciously tread lightly on the earth and give others the chance to do the same.
FROM WHERE DO YOU SOURCE YOUR INGREDIENTS?
Marina and I do all of the sourcing ourselves, so we are picky about what ingredients and packaging we choose. Likewise, we are in charge of all of our products and oversee everything.
YOUR FAVOURITE PRODUCT IN THE LINE:
That's like choosing your favourite child, but my favourite package is definitely our compostable Skin Stick that produces zero waste. Our Skin Stick is multi-use – for face, lips and body. The herbal balm provides three key benefits: skin healing, moisture and protection. The aromatherapeutic scent hails from the roots, leaves and flowers that make up this formula, which is packaged in a 100% compostable tube.
WHAT'S NEXT FOR EARTH TU FACE?
We have a lot of dreams and exciting things in the pipeline. We are looking forward to expanding the line, moving into other categories and doing more collaborations with inspiring designers. There is never a shortage of ideas!
THE SECRET TO RADIANT SKIN IS:
Laughter – people look radiant when they are happy. And water. I really believe that being in the ocean and taking baths as often as possible are key to having a healthy glow. Of course, taking care of your skin and yourself is important as well.
WHAT IS YOUR FOOD PHILOSOPHY?
Great question! I really believe that food is medicine, that it's one of life's great joys. Organic produce is a must. Eating what you grows feels incredible – there is a connection there that is juicy and real. I make nourishing stocks with fresh herbs, vegetables and bones and use them as a base for soups in the winter; in the summer, I juice fresh vegetables. I make my own sauerkraut and fermented foods. Herbals teas are a staple all year round. I don't believe in being so rigid about health that food loses its flavour, texture or joy, nor do I think there is only one way to eat as every body is different. Nourishing Traditions by Sally Fallon and The Art of Simple Food by Alice Waters are my favourite cookbooks.
HOW DO YOU MAINTAIN YOUR HEALTH AND WELL-BEING?
It's a balancing act. I take a lot of baths, I meditate. There is a point in the day when work just gets cut off and I preserve that boundary. Getting outdoors, laughing with loved ones, counting my blessings and the feeling like I'm giving back are all tremendously important.
WHAT MAKES YOU HAPPY?
Hearing hopeful world news in the media. Watching videos of unlikely animal friends. Playing with essential oils and creating things. Flowers. Spending time in nature, with loved ones, and, of course, with furry friends.
