Mauli Rituals

Mauli Rituals is a London-based Ayurvedic skincare and well-being company founded by husband-and-wife team Anita and Bittu Kaushal.

At present, the range contains an exfoliant, face oils, body oils, hair oil, serums, face mist, soap, perfume oil, bath salts, muslin cloths, tea infusions and superfood blends.

Everything is formulated without parabens, glycols, sulphates, phthalates, synthetic preservatives or fragrances, and the entire range is suitable for vegans.

I caught up with Anita to talk about inspiration,
the power of prevention and
the importance of daily rituals.

Q&A

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO START MAULI RITUALS?

It was a desire to keep Ayurvedic wisdom alive for future generations. Both Bittu and I had previously worked in premium skincare distribution and development respectively. This gave us a keen insight into the superb synthetic products that delivered some  promising results. But a turning point in our lives made us question our choices and start a major overhaul in motion. It was during a trip to our ancestral homeland that we rediscovered the healing power of India's ancient wisdom, traditions and revered beauty rituals. We looked for locally-made beauty and well-being products to distribute in the UK, but for us these lacked the scent, texture, application and the manufacturing transparency that we had come to expect. So we returned home and set about creating our own range.

WHY DO YOU FEEL IT'S SO IMPORTANT TO USE NATURAL INGREDIENTS?

I am the first to admit that I took my Ayurvedic heritage for granted and while my beautiful mother only ever used pure oils to maintain her flawless skin, I would use high-end lotions and potions. My father-in-law is an Ayurvedic doctor and, at 84, he glows with such vitality and is of fit mind and body. He is a shining example of the power of prevention. Skin is the largest organ and it makes no sense to treat it with harsh toxins and chemicals that are then absorbed into the blood stream and lymphatic system.

FROM WHERE DO YOU SOURCE YOUR INGREDIENTS?

We are proud to be a British brand and while we buy our ingredients from reputable UK suppliers, many blends are made using Indian ingredients known for their incredible nourishing, healing and beautifying properties.

HOW DO YOU KEEP YOUR PRODUCTION AND PACKAGING PROCESSES ETHICAL AND SUSTAINABLE?

We work with ethical producers and suppliers who are as passionate about well-being as we are. Our packaging is recyclable and, in many cases, reusable. I love the idea that our vessels should give pleasure beyond their original use.

YOUR FAVOURITE PRODUCT IN THE LINE:

The Grow Strong Hair Oil. It really works and it reminds me of Friday evenings spent with my mother, of her giving me an Indian head massage. For relaxing, I love the massage oils.

WHAT'S NEXT FOR MAULI RITUALS?

We're about to launch our first candles. Each one will be made with non-GMO wax and the finest essential oils. We are launching into the Conran Store in September and we are going into two beautiful spa hotels next year.

THE SECRET TO RADIANT SKIN IS...

A loving heart that learns to let go and trust the journey. And for instant gratification, our Radiance Exfoliant/Mask does a pretty amazing job, too.

WHAT IS YOUR FOOD PHILOSOPHY?

A little of what you fancy does you good.

HOW DO YOU MAINTAIN YOUR HEALTH AND WELL-BEING?

I am not there yet. It's baby steps and I have a way to go, but I am absolutely loving the journey. I add gym sessions to my diary as if they are a work appointment, meditate every morning, and have a Mauli bathing ritual every night.

WHAT MAKES YOU HAPPY?

An awareness of making mistakes and having the courage to learn from them. Reaching a point where I break the cycle and don't repeat the same mistake again is a happy place to be. My family, travel, Mauli and sweet solitude are all causes for happiness and, above all else, waking up fit and healthy makes me happy.
