May Lindstrom is an artisan producer of small-batch skincare based in Los Angeles, California.
Founded in 2012, the company has become known for its luxurious high-performance products and impeccable customer service.
At present the range contains a cleanser, scrub, mask, mist, serum, beauty balm and body oil.
Everything is formulated without GMOs, phthalates, sulfates, mineral oil, synthetic fillers, fragrances or preservatives, is gluten-free, and (with the exception of The Honey Mud) suitable for vegans.
I spoke to May about sourcing the best ingredients, her commitment to sustainable business practices, the importance of self-care and how she stays happy and healthy.
WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO START MAY LINDSTROM?
This line was born out of a desire to create blissful bookends in my day, a time in the morning and night that was just for me. Having formulated my own skincare for years out of necessity – I am blessed with highly sensitive and chemically-reactive skin – I yearned to create something that was luxurious and lovely. My foundation in purity and simplicity is solid, but it was time for me to embrace playfulness and beauty in my potions. I wanted to feel something when I picked up a bottle and entered my cleansing ritual. I wanted to feel peace, joy and celebration all in that one moment. And I wanted to share that with every woman I loved and cared about so she could feel this, too.
WHY DO YOU FEEL IT'S SO IMPORTANT TO USE NATURAL INGREDIENTS?
Your skin absorbs 60% of whatever you put on it, so I follow the same philosophy for skincare as I would in my diet. There is simply no place for pesticides, preservatives or unnecessary synthetics. It's not about being an "organic" brand as much as it is creating the highest possible quality skin treats that I am capable of.
I believe in simplicity. While I have given an incredible amount of attention to designing a ritual that creates a feeling of decadence and celebration, my very core is as basic and grounded as it gets. My formulations are not magic – it's something better than that. The changes you will see in your skin over time will not be an illusion and they will not be temporary. My goal is always to restore your own natural balance, to bring health to your skin and to illuminate the vibrancy of your beauty in a way that will grow as you do.
FROM WHERE DO YOU SOURCE YOUR INGREDIENTS?
I purchase raw ingredients in their fresh and active state from a very small handful of suppliers who work directly with farms all over the world. With the plant ingredients especially, this is incredibly important. It is imperative to fill each and every bottle with the most vibrant raw materials possible. That sometimes means a lot of searching and alternating areas of the world, as seasons fluctuate and certain crops are more or less abundant. I select only ingredients that are organic, biodynamic, wild-crafted, cruelty-free, sustainable, and consciously produced. I create my own proprietary formulas and do not purchase base formulas, use labs generics of shortcuts.
HOW DO YOU KEEP YOU PRODUCTION AND PACKAGING PROCESSES ETHICAL AND SUSTAINABLE?
I think sustainability is massively important in all facets of life. In my business, we practice consciousness of the environment at every step of production. Each member of the team shares my belief that our planet has given us everything, and we ensure a healthy workplace for the human hands behind all this beauty.
Our packaging is stunning but also serves a purpose. Miron violet glass works like a natural filter, blocking the complete spectrum of visible light, while allowing a certain part to be permeable for radiation in the spectral range of AV-A and infra-red light. This unique combination offers optimal protection, lengthening the stability and potency of our collection without the need for parabens and preservatives. We have many clients who keep our beautiful bottles to use as vases (flowers stay much fresher than in clear glass) and our jars are fantastic for holding odds and ends in the bathroom.
Our boxes and glassware are fully recyclable. Even our lids are made of recycled paper pulp and a glue derived from fruits and vegetables. We pack our boxes for shipment with recycled paper materials rather than plastic or peanuts, send digital receipts rather than paper, and do not include unnecessary branding that will simply be tossed upon delivery.
YOUR FAVOURITE PRODUCT IN THE LINe:
The Blue Cocoon is my absolute favourite treat of all time. It is truly magical as a daily hydrator or as a special treatment for skin that is sensitive, inflamed, damaged and acneic, as a spot treatment or for the full face, neck and décolleté, or as the most effective eye and lip treatment there is. The star ingredient is blue tansy, which calms and relieves inflammation on a magical level. It's like a meditation and spa vacation for your skin – in aromatherapy, blue tansy is used to reduce anxiety, heal sleep disorders and soften the feeling of being out of control.
WHAT'S NEXT FOR MAY LINDSTROM?
I have so many dreams about what is ahead. We are growing quickly, but my foundation and core philosophy stand so firmly on the grounds of intimacy, on being special, and on delivering the most over-the-top client service and a truly personal experience. I want the Skin collection to remain compact and concise, and for each piece to play a vital part of my ideal ritual. I have no desire to add dozens of new treats to the line, but I very much wish to continue adding to our story, and to bring in new pieces that deepen our connection to self and skin.
Looking forward, I see space for more collaboration with other artisans, for just a few more special products that I feel deeply pulled to develop, and I am also looking every day to discover more ways to delight each client individually – asking myself what more I can share that will show each and every one of you how truly grateful I am for your support in this dream of mine.
THE SECRET TO RADIANT SKIN IS...
Eat the rainbow. Move your body. Breathe. Romance yourself to the point of blushing. Know that you are beautiful.
WHAT IS YOUR FOOD PHILOSOPHY?
For me, diet is absolutely key to beauty and well-being. I eat very well and am a lover of good food. I subscribe to two different CSAs and love having these mystery boxes of super fresh fruit and vegetables show up on my doorstep. Living in California, I am blessed with incredible access to the best farm-fresh food all year. It inspires me to cook gorgeous food that feeds my soul and my family. I believe in eating the rainbow, choosing the most vibrant produce and mixing up meals regularly for nutritional variety. I incorporate tons of whole unprocessed grains and every type of legume I can get my hands on. And I do believe in indulgence – something yummy and over-the-top that makes you giddy and provides decadent pleasure. There's a saying I like: "Everything in moderation, including moderation."
HOW DO YOU MAINTAIN YOUR HEALTH AND WELL-BEING?
Water and good fats – I cannot stress enough the importance of providing your body these vital sources of hydration and nourishments. A deficiency affects absolutely everything, from the health of your organs to the glow of your skin. Nutrition is key, and we have to do our part with nourishing skincare as well. Pure plant oils are a godsend. You cannot skip them in either your diet or your beauty ritual.
My go-to DIY: a hot bath, salty as the sea, and pure honey blended with a bit of cinnamon, slathered forehead to breasts. Simple and life-changing.
WHAT MAKES YOU HAPPY?
I have a philosophy on self love that is of major priority to me, and which I try to instil in each client: Beauty is a reflection of your inner self – prioritise your own deliciousness and be truly, fully, authentically You. Be sure that you create time to rest your body and your mind, to play and encourage opportunity for learning and joy, to share yourself fully with others and also to embrace moments of time alone. When we are happy and intimately immersed in our world, our beauty cannot help but shine through. Savour time out with family and loved ones, rediscover your child eyes and make it a point to restore joy in your world.
