MV Skincare is a Sydney-based producer of organic, small-batch skincare.
Founded in 1997 by Sharon McGlinchey, the brand is a cult favourite among celebrities and beauty editors alike and it's not difficult to see why – after a month of performing their signature Three-Minute Ritual morning and night my 'problematic' skin has never looked better.
At present the range includes cleansers, toners, moisturisers, face oils, face masks, serums, hand cream and body oil.
The products are primarily organic – in the event that an organic ingredient is not up to standard, a natural alternative will be used – and are formulated without parabens, sulfates, glycols, phthalates, tricolsan, mineral oils and synthetic fragrances, fillers or preservatives. Everything in the range is suitable for vegans and free from gluten.
I spoke to Sharon about cosmetic toxicity, the 80/20 rule and what will come next...
WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO START MV SKINCARE?
In 1996, I was helping a client who had developed a petrochemical sensitivity. I was astonished that the salon brands I had worked with, which were many, could offer me nothing that was petrochemical-free. I then began to research cosmetic ingredient toxicity, which led me to a workshop on how to make chemical-free skincare. It was at this workshop that MV's Rose Soothing and Protective Moisturiser was born. Its popularity and success was unexpected and I quickly realised there was a very big gap in the market for a results-focused natural skincare line and, in particular, one that genuinely addressed sensitivity.
WHY DO YOU FEEL IT'S SO IMPORTANT TO USE NATURAL INGREDIENTS?
It makes perfect sense to me to use the highest quality natural and organic plant extracts and essential oils – they are like medicine for the skin. After more than a decade of research I am left in no doubt that commercial skincare is loaded with cheap, toxic and often irritating ingredients which have no health benefits whatsoever. I am passionate about skin health and helping to reduce modern day toxic overload. I believe strongly in a no compromise approach, which is why my formulas have remained the same for fifteen years and why I still have a core facial range of only twelve products. Working with high concentrations of natural ingredients which deliver impressive results is extremely rewarding and clearly demonstrates we can achieve more with less. I believe that in my lifetime using natural ingredients in skincare will become the rule rather than the exception.
FROM WHERE DO YOU SOURCE YOUR INGREDIENTS?
From all over the world. When you use a diverse range of plant extracts and essential oils they can't possibly all come from one country. However, I do buy Australian ingredients when possible, but my selection criteria is always based on quality – never on price.
HOW DO YOU KEEP YOUR PRODUCTION AND PACKAGING PROCESSES ETHICAL AND SUSTAINABLE?
We manufacture in small batches to ensure freshness and we have a unique manufacturing process which retains the integrity of the valuable plant nutrients, resulting in naturally active formulations. Our water is distilled on site and we use filling processes that are not fully automated, therefore minimising energy usage and helping to provide employment opportunities for people in the local community. We do not box all of our products as this is unnecessary and wasteful on many levels. We use aluminium packaging as it is light, hygienic, non-breakable and around 75% recyclable.
YOUR FAVOURITE PRODUCT IN THE LINE:
The Rose Booster Plus – it makes me smile and makes my skin glow.
WHAT'S NEXT FOR MV SKINCARE?
We are currently working on a shampoo that is not only for the hair but is a gentle all-over body wash too. There will also be a conditioner as well.
THE SECRET TO RADIANT SKIN IS...
Using high-quality natural and organic skincare, eating well, avoiding prolonged periods of stress and embracing the beauty of ageing naturally and gracefully. Life is far too short to obsess about wrinkles!
WHAT IS YOUR FOOD PHILOSOPHY?
I follow my instinct and eat what I feel is right for my body. I eat lots of vegetables, berries and certain nuts that I know I digest well. I am not a vegetarian but I eat far less meat than I used to and I am now extremely particular about where the meat and fish comes from. I avoid wheat but my guilty pleasure is sourdough bread toasted for breakfast three mornings a week. I am a big fan of the 80/20 rule so I try to eat as healthily as possible most of the time, but on those occasions I find myself walking past the really amazing French patisserie in my neighbourhood, I do indulge. The secret is not feeling guilty when you have the odd 'treat' from time to time.
HOW DO YOU MAINTAIN YOUR HEALTH AND WELL-BEING?
I love yoga, it's my life-saver – so very grounding for anyone who leads a busy life.
WHAT MAKES YOU HAPPY?
Being able to travel and spread the word about the benefits of 'clean' skincare. This is only possible because I have the most amazing team of girls in Sydney. Spreading the word is so much easier since the emergence of bloggers. Our customers love to hear independent reviews as they know they are real and honest.
