In a workshop near the Peak District National Park, Natalie and Andrew Bond produce small-batch organic skincare products and candles. Together the husband-and-wife team hand-make each item, using the highest-quality raw ingredients and traditional methods to create safe, effective, luxe products, free from synthetic fragrances and preservatives.
It is admirable that Natalie and Andrew are so committed to utilising botanical ingredients, recyclable packaging and sustainable, ethical manufacturing processes, yet refuse to compromise on quality or style. Their stripped-back formulas, branding and approach to business speak, I think, to a wider shift within the skincare industry.
Curious to know more about this relatively new company, I asked co-founder Natalie about inspiration, innovation and what makes her happy.
WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO START NATHALIE BOND ORGANICS?
It all started when I fell pregnant with our first child and became extremely sensitive to my high street beauty products. I began investigating why they were affecting me and found lots of information about natural vs. synthetic products. I had never thought about it before and was instantly curious about why we use chemicals on our skin when elements of nature can do just as good a job ... or even better.
WHY DO YOU FEEL IT'S SO IMPORTANT TO USE NATURAL INGREDIENTS?
Our bodies absorb what we apply to our skin and many women use so many chemicals that have unknown long-term effects. I just didn't want to take that risk anymore when I could make an instant switch to natural products. I don't regret it.
FROM WHERE DO YOU SOURCE YOUR INGREDIENTS?
Our organic ingredients come from all over the world. We try to source whatever we can from the UK, but some of the ingredients can't be grown here.
HOW DO YOU DEVISE AND FORMULATE THE DIFFERENT BLENDS AND SCENT COMBINATIONS?
We don't really have a strategy. It started with wanting to find essential oils that burn well and work effectively on their own. When we find an essential oil we like, we work on that as a potential product. We don't want to overwhelm our customers with too much choice, so our range will always be easy to navigate.
WHAT MADE YOU DECIDE TO GIVE 20 PER CENT OF YOUR PROFITS TO WORLD VISION?
While we were in the process of setting up the business we learned that over 20,000 children under the age of five die every day from preventable causes. So many children are suffering because they don't have access to any medical care. It is a subject close to our hearts because our son was born six weeks early and would not have survived without the expert care he received. We wanted to do something so we decided to give a percentage of our profits to World Vision to help children in some of the world's poorest communities.
WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVOURITE NATURAL MAKE-UP PRODUCTS?
I love 100% Pure. Their make-up is free of the harmful toxins that are common in other cosmetics. I use their blusher, eye shadow and mascara.
DO YOU HAVE A SKINCARE ROUTINE OR ANY PREFERRED PRACTICES?
I shower with one of our soap bars each day and use our oil/balms as face and body moisturiser. Every 2–3 days I use our scrub as an exfoliator. In the evenings I apply coconut oil to my face to remove my make-up and then wash my face with our soap. That's pretty much it. I love how quick it is, especially as I usually have a little one dangling from my leg as I'm trying to get ready for the day...
THE SECRET TO RADIANT SKIN IS...
In my opinion, it is drinking lots of water, eating a healthy diet, and not loading your system with unnecessary chemicals...
WHAT IS YOUR FOOD PHILOSOPHY?
We consume plenty of fruit and veg throughout the day and I try to buy mostly organic meat and fish. With some of our staples – for instance, milk and butter – I only buy organic, but due to cost we do have to be a little selective.
ASIDE FROM USING NATURAL PRODUCTS, WHAT ELSE DO YOU DO TO MAINTAIN YOUR HEALTH AND WELL-BEING?
As a family we LOVE walking in the countryside. It instantly lifts my heart and soul when I have a bit of fresh air and exercise.
