Nourish is a London-based producer of organic skincare.
Founded in 2012 by cosmetic chemist Dr. Pauline Hili, the company uses plant-derived ingredients to create high performance (but very affordable...) products, all of which are made in the UK.
At present the range contains cleansers, toners, serums, moisturisers, eye cream, treatment oils, illuminators, shower gels, hand cream and body creams.
Everything is formulated without parabens, petroleum, phthalates, sulfates, EDTA, GMOs, synthetic fillers or fragrances and the entire line is certified by the Vegan Society.
I spoke to Pauline about inspiration, organic ingredients, a new use for kale and more...
WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO START NOURISH?
Having been one of the original scientists formulating organic skincare products, it is wonderful to see how this sector has flourished. Many customers now realise the importance of looking carefully at what they put onto their skin as well as what they eat. However, aside from branding, there is little differentiation between many of these organic products. I felt that the time was right to move organic skincare to the next level and give customers more effective skincare.
WHY DO YOU FEEL IT'S SO IMPORTANT TO USE NATURAL INGREDIENTS?
I feel it's not just natural that's important – my heart is in the organic world. Looking after health is a fundamental driver, but maintaining the health of the earth is crucial, too. Protecting the soil supports all species and by choosing organic ingredients I minimise Nourish's impact. Using natural ingredients on the skin brings some real benefits: 1) The skin appears brighter; 2) Environmental damage is lessened; 3) There is an immediate reduction in our exposure to synthetic chemicals; 4) The lipid layer of the skin is maintained.
FROM WHERE DO YOU SOURCE YOUR INGREDIENTS?
We put a lot of emphasis on our supply chain and all the ingredients we use are traceable. We only work with suppliers we trust and we look to the Soil Association to certify our products because we believe in their high standards.
HOW DO YOU KEEP YOUR PRODUCTION AND PACKAGING PROCESSES ETHICAL AND SUSTAINABLE?
Our factory is inspected annually by the Soil Association and we are pleased to work to their guidelines. The whole range is vegan and we are certified by the Vegan Society – the 'Leaping Bunny' demonstrates our commitment to keeping our products cruelty-free.
WHAT'S NEXT FOR NOURISH?
Innovation underpins all I do and I look for beneficial new ingredients to improve the effectiveness of our products. My next big challenge is air pollution – I am currently working on skincare solutions to tackle this. Our organic Kale range is a good example; kale applied topically has recently been show to play a key role in helping to reduce the damage done to skin by airborne pollutants – a real issue for urban dwellers.
YOUR FAVOURITE PRODUCT IN THE LINE:
Argan Skin Renew is one of my favourites. It has some fantastic ingredients which bring huge benefits but are not often used. One of these is Rose of Jericho which, together with hyaluronic acid, delivers superior hydration. Tripeptides stimulate collagen renewal while Myrrh and Frankincense slow the breakdown of collagen and elastin. The nutrient-rich oils – argan, borage, rosehip – aid repair of the skin's lipid layer.
THE SECRET TO RADIANT SKIN IS...
Treat your skin as you would your body. Skin is the biggest organ; you need to give it the right nutrients and protect it from damage. It is surprising to see so many being mindful about what they eat but not taking the same amount of care over what they put on their skin.
WHAT IS YOUR FOOD PHILOSOPHY?
A little of everything but not too much of one thing. That way you can have a few indulgences but keep your body healthy.
HOW DO YOU MAINTAIN YOUR HEALTH AND WELL-BEING?
I love swimming and go most days before work. It gives me time and space to think. Walking is great, too, and allows you to enjoy your surroundings whilst keeping fit.
WHAT MAKES YOU HAPPY?
I love to be in the lab and training young scientists – it gives me a sense of purpose and fulfilment. I dream of one day having my own skin research centre to teach people all about the joys of formulating skincare.
