Omorovicza is a Budapest-based luxury skincare line. Founded in 2006 by husband-and-wife team Margaret and Stephen Omorovicza, the company utilises naturally occurring ingredients such as mineral-rich water from Hungary's fabled thermal springs and hydrosoluable Moor Mud from Lake Hévïz to create effective, safe and sustainable products.
At present, the range includes cleansers, toners, moisturisers, masks, eye creams, serums, BB creams, self-tanner, concealers, lip balm, hand cream, body oils and body scrubs. (I credit the Thermal Cleansing Balm, Refining Facial Polisher and Queen of Hungary Hydrating Mist with saving my skin from hormone-related ruin each month.)
Omorovicza's products are formulated using 99% natural ingredients, without parabens, polyethylene glycol, petrochemicals, silicones, sodium laureth sulfate, synthetic colours or fragrances, and – with the exception of the Perfecting Lip Balm and the Gold Rescue Cream – are suitable for vegans. They have a loyalty programme and are very generous when it comes to samples.
I spoke to Margaret about her connection to Hungary, the importance of balance and what will come next for Omorovicza...
WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO START OMOROVICZA?
Stephen and I met in Budapest and discovered these amazing healing waters together. I was inspired by the immediate effect they had on my troubled skin and Stephen, who was also hugely impressed, was driven to create Omorovicza by the opportunity to share this local treasure with people who could not visit the source personally. His Hungarian family also has a long-standing connection to local thermal baths like the Rácz.
WHY DO YOU FEEL IT'S IMPORTANT TO USE NATURAL INGREDIENTS?
Omorovicza prides itself on being a modern, innovative, daring brand. The fact that we exclude most synthetic ingredients is that, due to scientific advances, one simply does not need them. There are world-class alternatives to parabens, petrochemicals, synthetic fragrances etc. That said, our customers do want anti-ageing results so we review ingredients on a case-by-case basis and judge them not on whether they are natural or not, but on how they will make the product work to create youthful, luminous skin. Therefore, we bring in other ingredients. For example, Retinol (vitamin A); although not natural, there is no better ingredient to decrease the depth and appearance of wrinkles. In this instance, we encapsulate it so that it is introduced to the skin in a way which delivers great results without potentially harming skin or creating sensitivity.
FROM WHERE DO YOU SOURCE YOUR INGREDIENTS?
All over the world. But our main ingredient, which comprises over 60% of all our products, is an anti-ageing healing water which has undergone a patented process to make it more bio-available to the skin. We use a source in Budapest that has been in my husband's family for hundreds of years...
HOW DO YOU KEEP YOUR PRODUCTION AND PACKAGING PROCESSES ETHICAL AND SUSTAINABLE?
We work with a Nobel Prize-winning Laboratory of Dermatology to ensure we have the best formulations.
YOUR FAVOURITE PRODUCT IN THE LINE:
This changes all the time! I am currently loving our new cleanser – the Hydra Melting Cleanser [on sale from October] – and our Blue Diamond range which includes our new eye cream.
WHAT'S NEXT FOR OMOROVICZA?
We are getting involved with Fashion Week – New York and Budapest – which has been a lot of fun to have fantastic make-up artists like Gucci Westman use our products backstage. We have also just launched in Australia and our Middle East and Asia business is really flying. We are also collaborating with the Four Seasons in Russia.
THE SECRET TO RADIANT SKIN IS...
Feeling good and having an impeccable, tailored skincare regime.
WHAT IS YOUR FOOD PHILOSOPHY?
I am a huge foodie. I went to cooking school in Paris and both my mother and brother have restaurants. I love entertaining, too. I have a massive sweet tooth and I think a great piece of chocolate makes any day better...
WHAT DO YOU DO TO MAINTAIN YOUR HEALTH AND WELL-BEING?
I think it is about finding a balance in everything you do and not being too dogmatic about things. For me, exercise is key but so is a healthy, balanced state of mind – sometimes that means being a bit cheeky and playing hooky to watch an old movie with a plate of chocolate chip cookies.
WHAT MAKES YOU HAPPY?
Running Omorovicza with my husband, spending time with our wonderful children, seeing friends and family. This, coupled with a healthy dose of curiosity about the world – be it art, music, travel, literature, politics, fashion – is a fun mix.
