Pursoma is a New York City-based wellness company.
Founded in 2014 by Shannon Vaughn, Pursoma specialises in producing modern, luxurious bath soaks and detox products using only the finest natural ingredients.
At present, the range contains five bath soaks – Digital Detox, Earthbound Body Mask, Hot Tub Bath, Minerals De Mer, Resurrection Bath – and a sea spray nasal rinse for use with a neti pot. Everything is suitable for vegans, and formulated without parabens, fillers, synthetic fragrances, preservatives, or any other chemical additives.
The 10oz pouches can be purchased individually or as part of a cleanse package via the Pursoma website. (Londoners: Digital Detox will soon be stocked at Liberty's.)
I spoke to Shannon about inspiration, the benefits of bathing, meditation and more.
WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO START PURSOMA?
Pursoma was created because I faced a health crisis which I was confident was a result of environmental toxicity. Extremely stressful situation in my life, poor nutrition in my daily diet, and toxic hormone disruptors in my beauty and skincare regime left me unwell and it literally stopped me in my tracks. I was on my bicycle and had the worst pain from what I later learned was an ovarian cyst. I found out that this is something that affects many women but the only treatment is a lifetime of birth control pills and/or surgery. Unhappy with the prospects offered by traditional medicine, I engaged in holistic therapies guided by a nutritionist and integrative doctor that emphasised detox and rejuvenation.
Following my recovery, I worked closely with a nutritionist and biochemist to formulate potent, effective detox treatments that left me feeling vibrant and alive and gave me a sense of internal peace. It was this process of 'soma' (or transition) to wellness, along with the understanding I gained about what it meant to be truly health, that inspired me to want to spread this message to others and share the tools to achieve similar results. Thus, Pursoma was born.
WHY DO YOU FEEL IT'S IMPORTANT TO USE NATURAL INGREDIENTS?
I don't believe in putting unnatural ingredients in my body and I feel the same way about putting them on my body. I also like to use products that I can see and identify the ingredients; it's important to be able to trace each component back to its whole raw form because it ensures it has been minimally processed and/or chemically treated.
FROM WHERE DO YOU SOURCE YOUR INGREDIENTS?
All of our formulations are created from pure ingredients that are organic and wild harvested or sustainably farmed. Each ingredient has a specific, active purpose and is fresh-packed to ensure potency. No preservatives, chemical additives or processes are used at this point, guaranteeing our ingredients are safe for the earth and safe for your body.
We use French grey sea salt from the coasts of Brittany, harvested by hand and packed wet to maintain its high mineral content. Bathing with a pure sea salt encourages the body to open its pores and release toxicity.
Our French green clay comes from the quarries of the Haute Loire region. French green clay is extremely pure and consists of 99% clay. In contrast, most other commercially available clays are usually 60% clay and 40% sediment. Using a high-quality, pure clay is essential to the detox process.
Our North Atlantic seaweed is wild harvested from the seashores of Brittany, France. Our farm-raised algae is organic and grows in beds. it is harvested, extracted and dried on site to ensure quality, purity and freshness. Our algae and seaweed are rich in chlorophyll which makes them superior detoxifying agents that are good for your system and great for your skin. Both are known to aid in helping to prevent absorption of radiation and help ease symptoms of eczema and psoriasis.
HOW DO YOU KEEP YOUR PRODUCTION AND PACKAGING PROCESSES ETHICAL AND SUSTAINABLE?
I got to the source. Pursoma never uses a third-party supplier. I personally go to the location or supplier of the ingredient. I research the area, the history, the potency and the company that is supplying the ingredients. Pursoma works with smaller suppliers to allow us to have closer access and assuredness that the product always remains at a high level of purity. The raw ingredients are harvested, cleaned, mixed and packed at the extraction site. We essentially provide a farm-to-customer product. The product elements are sent to the US for final packaging and distribution. We have a few machines that mix whole, raw ingredients and fill our packages. Everything is under our supervision and closely monitored.
YOUR FAVOURITE PRODUCT IN THE LINE:
I love Minerals De Mer – it's a great bath that you can use everyday. It has the elements of the salt, laminaria and spirulina. Salt eases a fatigued body and helps you to sweat out toxins. The algae has the ability to absorb toxins and is very nourishing and hydrating to the skin.
WHAT'S NEXT FOR PURSOMA?
We have some new products coming out in late autumn that we're very excited about. In addition to a beautiful jute dry brush, we're introducing Pursoma Botanicals, a line that features essentials oil. We've been working with Amy Galper of the New York Institute of Aromatherapy to create these blends. These oils will be included in a new body soak and a new foot soak, with more products to follow.
THE SECRET TO RADIANT SKIN IS...
Inner health and a calm mind.
WHAT IS YOUR FOOD PHILOSOPHY?
I try to be conscious of what I consume, especially if I am on the go because then I have to more focused about it. When I am at home I have developed a very healthy routine and I stick to that. Obviously, there are time when things need to be adjusted, for instance when I was pregnant and I felt the need to eat animal products because my body wanted them. But usually I make it very simple for myself and I look at a meal or menu or food item and say, 'Can I see the origin of the food? It is a whole food?' And I try to eat as simply as possible. I eat stuff that you can see the ingredients as close to the original, raw forms of the food's source as possible.
WHAT DO YOU DO TO MAINTAIN YOUR HEALTH AND WELL-BEING?
Meditation. I can't survive the busy day without a short meditation in the morning. On the days when I can't quiet my mind I use The Mindfulness App, which has some great guided meditations.
WHAT MAKES YOU HAPPY?
I feel it's important to be present. I can't predict happiness in the future and I can't compare my happiness in the past to what I have today. So I try to be very present in each day and I feel very contented when I am able to be productive, health and practice gratitude for what I have. I also think you know your body best and have the ability to heal yourself. Self care in the most important gift you can give yourself. The state of health will support your mental and emotional happiness and this is a wonderful place to be in for yourself and others around you.
