Squirrel Sisters is a functional food brand based in London, England. Founded in 2015 by sisters Gracie and Sophie Tyrrell, the company is known for its delicious snack bars.
At present, there are four varieties – Cacao Brownie, Cacao Orange, Coconut Cashew and Raspberry Ripple. Made from a base of dates, nuts and sultanas, each packet holds two 20g bars. You're going to want to eat both, but if you're mindful about your sugar intake you might want to limit yourself to just one as they contain 5–6.8 g.
While the bars are not entirely organic, they are raw, paleo, gluten-free, high in fibre and suitable for vegans. If you live in London, you can buy them from Whole Foods and various other independent retailers dotted around town. Otherwise, you can purchase them online at Planet Organic, Holland and Barrett or directly from Squirrel Sisters.
I caught up with Gracie recently to talk inspiration, natural
ingredients, food philosophies, and what will come next...
WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO START SQUIRREL SISTERS?
We want the best of both worlds – we love being healthy and feeling good but also like to have fun. We started with a blog in 2014 and Sophie moved to Singapore for work and I was working in London as an actress. Our blog was a way to stay in touch and share recipes with each other while living on opposite sides of the world. Sophie has a gluten intolerance so I used to make the bars for her when we lived together. At the time we found that there wasn't really anything available that was gluten-free that still tasted good and wasn't packed with sugar. We found that the healthy products out there were either full of hidden 'nasties' or tasted like bird food; to be healthy meant to be boring and we wanted to change that and the stigma attached to healthy food. We wanted to make being healthy fun and enjoyable while remaining 100% natural. So after the blog grew we decided to launch our bars.
WHY DO YOU FEEL IT'S SO IMPORTANT TO USE NATURAL INGREDIENTS?
We love natural ingredients because they make us feel good. Eating well and fuelling your body with natural foods will keep you energised, healthy and happy. We are big believers in saying 'you are what you eat' – how you fuel your body determines how you perform, feel and behave.
FROM WHERE DO YOU SOURCE YOUR INGREDIENTS?
We source our ingredients from lots of different places, mainly in Europe, but our bars are made in the UK.
HOW DO YOU KEEP YOUR PRODUCTION AND PACKAGING PROCESSES ETHICAL AND SUSTAINABLE?
We do as much as we can to keep every part of our business ethical and sustainable – our packing is 100% recyclable.
YOUR FAVOURITE PRODUCT IN THE RANGE:
Oooh, that's a tough one. It really depends on the time of day and our mood. We both love the coconut cashew in the morning and pre- or post-workout; the raspberry ripple is a lovely mid-morning snack; and the cacao brownie and cacao orange are amazing for an afternoon pick-me-up when you need something chocolatey.
WHAT'S NEXT FOR SQUIRREL SISTERS?
We are the process of working on another range. We have just run the trial and everything went well so if all goes to plan, the new products should be out in January.
WHAT IS YOUR FOOD PHILOSOPHY?
It's all about balance. We love being healthy and eating well but we also enjoy having a glass of wine (or three...) and chocolate from time to time. Eat when you're hungry, be kind to your body and listen to it.
THE BEST MEAL YOU EVER HAD:
On a family holiday in France. We went to this gorgeous little restaurant with our parents, the sun was shining and the wine was flowing. I remember I had an incredible risotto with olives and lots of herbs and spices; Sophie had a fish dish and it was just delicious. The atmosphere and setting definitely added to the experience.
WHAT DO YOU DO TO MAINTAIN YOUR HEALTH AND WELL-BEING?
Exercise! We both work-out quite a bit because it makes us feel good. Sophie is also keen on meditation and is currently using the Headspace app.
WHAT MAKES YOU HAPPY?
Having amazing friends and family that you can rely on and share your life experiences with is the best thing in the world and makes us so happy.
